Martina was born in October of 1927 in Tottenham, Ontario. After attending Grade 13 in Alliston, she started working at McGoey Brothers Insurance Company as a filing clerk, where she moved around within her family's business for 25 years. When Martina was not working, she loved to travel. She has travelled to seven European countries. She also loves to do art and has sold her work in Canada and England. Martina has called Riverwood home since September of 2003. She loves living at Riverwood because the staff are always willing to help everyone, especially the residents (or as she says, "the retirees").
Marion was born on a farm on the outskirts of Cookstown. She received her education from a one-room school near her farm and worked at the general store. She then worked for the Bank of Montreal for over 30 years. When Marion was not working, she was fortunate enough to travel coast to coast across Canada, most of Europe, and took many cruises through the Panama, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean. Marion moved to Riverwood almost 8 years ago and is very happy. It was wonderful to interview this dear lady who possesses extraordinary wit and humour at over 100 years young.
John was born on December 5, 1930 in Alliston. After receiving his education from Alliston High School, he worked for Deep Sea Tankers Limited on a tobacco farm. He was also the Everett Fire Chief and a long-time church volunteer. John is very passionate about giving back to the local community and was inducted into the Camp Borden Hall of Fame in 2009 as an honourary Fire Chief. He currently resides at Riverwood, which he has called home since February 2015.
Elsie was born on July 10, 1922 in Dundalk, Ontario. Elsie and her sister Ina spent the majority of their childhood helping at the family grocery store before moving to Alliston in 1944. She graduated from nursing school with a specialization in Pediatrics. While working, she met her husband Dave, and they enjoyed a busy life together being heavily involved with the local church. Elsie moved to Riverwood in April of 2009, where she could be social with others as well as live an independent lifestyle. Her family comes to visit her for the holidays and enjoys their special moments together.
Barb was born during World War II on September 8, 1941. She is a proud aunt and great-aunt and is always involved with her nieces and nephews whether she is babysitting, attending school functions, concerts or graduations. After she attended elementary and high school in Alliston, she moved to Orangeville to become a "Mother's Helper". She was also a housekeeper at Stevenson Memorial Hospital for over 15 years. Barb's mother Mona moved to Riverwood in February 2011, and later that year Barb joined her. Barb enjoys being active, socializing with other residents, and is always ready to offer a helping hand.
